Whether you're ordering a painting or a photograph, one question that has to be answered is, what size? The answer depends on where you will display it.
Will you display it on the wall or in a frame on a side table? How big is the space where it will be? Do you want this piece to be a focal point for the room? Or will it be hanging beside a few other pieces?
The larger the wall, the smaller the piece will look, and the bigger the size you will need, unless you're going for a gallery wall look where this piece will just be one in a large group of pieces hanging on the wall.
When people ask what size painting they should order, I recommend at least 8x10", and that is my most popular size painting, followed by 11x14". But as you can see in the image below, 8x10" can look pretty small on the wall.
The image below (image belongs to Makelyhome.com) is very helpful in determining an appropriate size.
Allow me to take you around my house a bit to further illustrate.
This is the wall behind my living room couch. These are all 8x10" matted to 11x14".
This is also an 8x10" photo matted in an 11x14" frame in the hallway between two doors. It's a fairly small amount of wall space, so the size looks pretty good here. I also love these frames from Michael's because they look really professional and clean, there are several frame color options, and they are a great value. They are usually running a buy one get one free on them, and as I write this, they're on sale for $9.99.
On this wall, above our beloved plaid couch, we have these 25" x 17" wood prints from Smallwood Home of our family photos. This wall was so bare before, but these definitely fill it out.
I hope this post has helped you make an informed decision on which size photo or painting to order. When it comes to matters like this, a picture is truly worth a thousand words!
